Q Journalists often use the following criteria/news qualifications to determine what stories should be included in a newspaper, on a website or on a broadcast news show: 1. Timeliness – Did the event just happen or is it a holiday/anniversary? (Example: Sept. 11 ) 1. Impact/Consequence – Impacts a few people in a major way (plane crash) or impacts a lot of people in a minor way (tuition fee increases). 1. Prominence – Involves a famous, high profile person (Presidents tax returns, celebrity divorce). 1. Proximity/nearness – local event or emotional closeness (Example: Focus on American tourists in cruise ship accident). Immigrants often follow news from their home countries even though they no longer live there. People of a particular religion might focus more on news about their religion. 1. Conflict/Drama – Battle or debate, struggles make news. People wouldn’t read or watch Romeo and Juliet if their parents were totally OK about them dating. 1. Unusualness – The unexpected and different. (Example: Man bites dog. Overdue library book returned after 70 years. Cat stows away on airplane from Los Angeles to New York.) 1. Currency – When a topic becomes popular and more relevant. (For example, gluten-free food.) 1. Necessity – A situation the journalist feels necessary to reveal. (For instance, as an immigration/multicultural issues reporter, I covered a diverse community. It was important to me to write articles highlight some of the unique/distinct aspects of the cultures in our community so readers could understand each other better. 1. Economics – Will it get ratings, generate webs clicks or sell magazines? (This is the reason why TV stations broadcast live police pursuits/car chases. People like to watch so it gets good ratings.)
